The Issue with Democracy

Leonard Farris — CLIP Oporto International School · 2026

The issue of Democracy

Democracy will destroy society. Not all opinions are equal. You wouldn't ask a random person to perform surgery; you'd ask a surgeon. So why let uninformed masses decide how to run a civilization? Democracy gives the same weight to someone who studied governance for decades. And somebody who hasn't thought about it at all. This leads politicians to stop telling the truth and start telling the people whatever they want to hear. Whoever promises the easiest solutions wins, not because they're right, but because they're popular. Democracy rewards emotion over reason, volume over wisdom, and the irony is Athens, the birthplace of democracy sentenced Socrates to death via democratic vote. The system killed the man who questioned it.
